Professional Engineer 1 – Assistant Roadway Engineer
Oregon Department of Transportation
Interstate Bridge Replacement (IBR) Program
Portland, Oregon | Vancouver, Washington
The role:
Leave your mark on history. Join the Interstate Bridge Replacement (IBR) program to help build a replacement Interstate Bridge that will span generations. You will also be part of a team that is modernizing the Interstate 5 corridor for travelers of today and tomorrow.
Join this historic effort by supporting its design and construction. We are currently seeking an assistant roadway engineer.
The Interstate Bridge Replacement (IBR) program is a mega infrastructure program with national significance led jointly by the states of Oregon and Washington. Its purpose is to address regional safety and mobility challenges facing the Interstate 5 highway system by replacing the aging bridge over the Columbia River between Portland, Ore. and Vancouver, Wash. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) are working together to develop solutions that improve seismic resiliency, bolster safety, reduce congestion, provide reliable public and active transportation, and facilitate better freight movement. The program has received more than $2 billion in federal grant funding and continues to seek further federal funding to build a bridge that keeps people and our economy moving into the future. The two states have also committed a billion dollars each to bring these improvements to fruition.
Join the IBR program for a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on the local community and region that will reverberate for decades.
This position will be a State of Oregon employee(s) based in Portland and work out of the program’s joint office in Vancouver. This is a hybrid remote position with expectation of in-office work 1-2 days a week, on average, or as business needs demand to collaborate with cross-discipline colleagues and program leadership.
We encourage people from all backgrounds to apply for our positions. We hope you’ll join us on our path to increasing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging through our values, commitments, strategies and actions.
Our next application screening is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2024. We encourage interested applicants not to delay in applying.
Before applying, visit our applicant information website to learn more about our process. If you are a current State of Oregon employee, you must apply through your employee Workday profile.
A day in the life:
Participate on program teams and projects and oversee design and preparations of the roadway portions of plans and estimates.
Conduct research, evaluate information across the agency, and provide details and data that will lead to agency methods and procedures.
Provide recommendations for projects to ensure they can be completed on time.
Assist the IBR senior roadway engineer and design manager with technical review and coordination.
Review and recommend approval, revision or denial of submitted design exception letters.
Review or assign the review of consultant plans for compliance with design standards for various roadway features.
Advise the consultant with development-related questions needing response from both ODOT and WSDOT or technical services as well as the FHWA and Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
Review plans for compliance with design standards and serve as the engineer of record on projects designed by non-registered crew staff unless a senior designer is assigned for oversight.
Assume the responsibilities of the senior designer in their absence and represent the senior designer at crew, technical, public and program team meetings.
Advise quality assurance staff on the review of the complex IBR Program when requested.
Work primarily in an office environment with hybrid work options available - research and data gathering projects require statewide travel and occasional exposure to traffic.
