Job Summary

The mission of the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) is to transform health through bold and innovative education, discovery, and service. This mission is supported by a set of strategic pillars with our commitment to people, discovery, education, care, and service. 

The Department of Human Genetics at UMMS is looking for a Chief Department Administrator (CDA). The CDA will partner with the Department Chair to manage departmental operations and accomplish strategic initiatives of the department that are aligned with the overall vision of UMMS. Importantly, the CDA has accountability to the Medical School?s Executive Director for Administration and Chief Operating Officer for academic activities. 

About the Department

The University of Michigan Department of Human Genetics (DHG), the first such department in the nation, was established in 1956 and has a nearly 70-year track record of sustained excellence and leadership in the basic sciences fields of human genetics and genomics. 

Chaired by Dr. Anthony Antonellis since 2019, the Department of Human Genetics currently has 55 faculty members including: 20 primary tenure-track faculty, 3 clinical faculty, 5 research faculty, 19 jointly appointed faculty, 4 LEO lecturers, and 4 active emeritus or adjunct faculty. In addition, there are currently 63 students, 13 post-docs, 8 administrative staff, 44 regular or temporary research staff, and 1 visiting scholar. 

Faculty-led research runs the gamut under the broad umbrella of human genetics and genomics, ranging from research topics in genetic counseling and ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) to the basic science of genome structure and function; genome evolution; epigenetics; gene regulation; genome mutagenesis; variant functional consequences; and the molecular etiology of inherited disorders. In addition to its thriving research portfolios, the faculty are engaged in training the next generation of scientists and clinicians via three degree-granting graduate programs: a Master's program in Human Genetics, a Master's program in Genetic Counseling, and a PhD program in Genetics & Genomics. 

The Department of Human Genetics has an average of $15M in total expenditures per year, with $10M in yearly research expenditures.

Responsibilities*

Operational Accountability: 
  • Partners with the Department Chair and leadership team to align departmental goals with the UMMS and Michigan Medicine strategy and to implement plans to accomplish these goals
  • Manages the department?s budget and planning, financial performance, internal controls, human resources, service agreements with internal and external stakeholders, research administration, space utilization, student services support and educational programs, marketing and communications, and other administrative activities.
  • Partners with the Department Chair in all areas of faculty affairs including appointment, promotion, faculty satisfaction, and many other areas. Partners with faculty affairs in UMMS and UMMS finance for faculty position planning.
  • Provides guidance and mentorship to faculty in administrative roles. 
  • Stays apprised of current issues affecting an academic medical center, understands how these may impact the department, and adjusts strategy accordingly.
  • Coordinates initiatives with medical school and campus initiatives/departments of finance, faculty affairs, research administration, Rackham Graduate School, Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (OGPS), human resources, development, space planning, procurement, facilities, maintenance, and custodial services.
  • Leads, supervises, mentors, and coaches a high performing team of administrative staff. 
  • Oversees, directs, or directly impacts all facility activities within departmental space. 
  • Serves as the final approver for all departmental expenditures and controls expenses in alignment with the departmental operating budget.
  • Partners with the Chair and Associate Chair for Climate to identify and implement strategies to support the department?s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

Required Qualifications*

  • MBA or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of management/leadership experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to present and gain acceptance of ideas and proposals.
  • Demonstrated experience with finance, internal controls, accounting, budgeting, and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated strength in verbal and written communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to be an effective leader in a complex and dynamic organization.
  • Knowledge of funds flow in the medical school.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in managing research grant activity, with specific knowledge of pre- and post- award management and research compliance.
  • Experience in reviewing and advising on contracts terms and in resolving complex project changes and proposal submission challenges.
  • Experience with facility management.
  • Experience in managing gift funds, endowments, and other financial assets.
  • Knowledge of the full range of faculty affairs and human resources.
  • Familiarity with both the GEO and LEO union contracts.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
