This position is located at APC Corporate Headquarters in Birmingham, AL
POSITION SUMMARY
This role will function as Environmental Affairs’ subject matter expert for administering Alabama Power’s environmental programs and compliance strategies related to both NPDES Construction Stormwater regulations and Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures (SPCC) regulations for Alabama Power Company’s generation fleet.
This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with ADEM’s Construction Stormwater Permit, including reviewing project scopes, writing Construction Best Management Practices Plans (CBMPPs), preparing Notices of Intent (NOI) to obtain permit coverage, and performing construction stormwater inspections. The successful candidate will proactively build and maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM).
In addition, this position will provide regulatory guidance and ensure compliance with SPCC regulations. Responsibilities include developing, implementing, and updating facility-specific SPCC Plans and conducting periodic site inspections to assess and document onsite conditions.
The successful candidate may also support additional water compliance programs as needs arise.
This position will be filled as an Environmental Engineer or Specialist, Exempt Level 3-6 (based on the candidate’s education/skills/experience).
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Engineering (e.g., Environmental, Civil, or Chemical) or science-related field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Science).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Alabama in an applicable engineering discipline, or the ability to obtain licensure or certification, is a plus.
- Qualified Credentialed Individual/Professional (QCI or QCP) certification, Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) certification, or the ability to obtain certification.
Experience:
- Understanding of Construction Stormwater regulations and/or other environmental water permitting.
- Familiarity with SPCC regulations, plan development, and implementation.
- Knowledge of GIS to develop project specific maps and figures.
- Demonstrated experience organizing, planning, prioritizing, and tracking multiple projects.
Skills & Abilities:
- Results-oriented and proactive in maintaining compliance with all water-related laws and regulations.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with customers and regulatory agency personnel.
- Ability to communicate environmental requirements, compliance obligations, and implementation strategies to customers and staff.
- Ability to develop environmental compliance strategies, policies, procedures, and guidance in response to new or evolving regulatory requirements.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and computer skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
