THE OPPORTUNITY

Maintains, inspects, operates, and repairs all buildings’ plumbing, heating, domestic water, sanitary systems Works alone or as a team member to maintain the aesthetic appeal and health of the Babson College landscapes and ensures college grounds are safe for the campus community. Coordinates daily workload in accordance with institutional priorities set forth by the Supervisor, Grounds Operations.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Execute daily preventative maintenance operations on all assigned vehicles and equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Complete assigned daily zone maintenance in accordance with all daily and seasonal tasks outlined in the Grounds Zone Maintenance Plan.
  • Complete work orders generated from the Service Response Center within assigned timeframe; follow up with supervisor as to the completion or non-completion of these tasks; fill out proper work records to reflect time and materials to complete work so it can be logged in the work management program.
  • Complete seasonal grounds maintenance work, including snow and ice removal, turf maintenance, planting bed maintenance, tree and shrub care, spring clean-up and fall leaf clean up.
  • Complete landscape construction activities.
  • Apply fertilizers in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and all applicable federal, state, and local codes.
  • Handle and dispose of all chemicals in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and all applicable federal, state, and local codes.
  • Wear all required safety equipment when conducting work; operate equipment and vehicles within manufacturer’s specified limits and intended use.
  • Assume other duties as assigned; provide help and assistance to other department trade group members as needed in the completion of work tasks; provide appropriate support in major campus events such as commencement, opening of school, and snow removal activities to maintain campus operations.

WHAT EDUCATION AND SKILLS YOU WILL NEED

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of landscape maintenance and/or construction experience.
  • Must be able to function well in a team/community environment, displaying common courtesies and politeness. Frequently interacts with students, teachers, co-workers, administrators, and government officials.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets (MSDS), landscape drawings, operating, maintenance, repair, installation, and procedure instructions and manuals.
  • Ability to write routine instructions, reports, logs, and descriptions of equipment problems and needs.
  • Ability to speak effectively to describe and explain specific problems and operating requirements on Grounds issues.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of landscape maintenance and construction practices and knowledge of minor grounds equipment maintenance.

HOW AND WHERE YOU WILL WORK

Must have had a valid unrestricted U.S. Driver’s License for one year, and maintain throughout employment an insurable (as determined by the College’s insurer’s criteria) or a satisfactory driving record; must successfully complete and pass the College’s vehicle training program within the first 60 days of employment; annual or more frequent review of employee’s driving record based on the College insurer’s criteria; and will attend safety training as required by management.

Physical Environment:

  • Regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; precarious places; hazardous chemicals; outside weather conditions and extreme heat.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • Usually moderate noise level.
  • Regularly required to work extended hours and participate in an after hours callback for campus emergencies.

Physical Demands

  • Operates a motor vehicle on a daily basis.
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Frequently required to lie down, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear, and smell.
  • Frequently required to sit.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Regularly climb and/or balance up to 10 feet, and frequently climb and/or balance up to 25 feet.
  • Regular use of close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The days and times for this position are Monday-Friday 6:00AM - 2:30PM

This is a non-exempt position with an hourly rate of $30.75. This position includes paid sick leave where required by law. Eligibility, accrual, and usage will follow applicable state and local regulations.
