Plum Point Energy Station is a 670 net MW coal-fired power plant located approximately 50 miles north of Memphis near Osceola, Arkansas.This position supports the fossil generating plants mission to achieve maximum unit availability in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner within all environmental and regulatory standards.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Installing, maintaining, analyzing, and modifying instrument and control systems associated with plant generating units, environmental systems, plant chemistry, and auxiliary systems.
  • Diagnosing, isolating and resolving problems with the operation of the instrument and control systems involving electronic, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and complex distributed control systems.
  • Verifying the accuracy of the operation and calibration of instruments and controls to ensure instruments are within Company and industry standards, making adjustments and replacements of defective equipment.
  • Performing maintenance of instruments and controls, adhering to service schedules; maintaining service records.
  • Uses test equipment & hand tools (i.e. drills, screwdrivers) to troubleshoot/maintain devices & systems for the plant
  • Perform changes or additions to personal computers and computer programs using various programmable logic controllers, data loggers, distributed control systems, and performance monitoring systems.
  • Analyzing complex test and operating data; preparing charts and graphs; and reporting on results as assigned.
  • Tuning and modifying complex control systems on Boiler/Turbine/Generator and other Combustion Controls.
  • Interfacing with manufacturers' representatives, production crew and other engineering personnel during installation and start-ups of new systems.
  • Perform tasks as necessary for continuity or restoration of service in an emergency.
  • Communicate condition of equipment and status of jobs to group leaders, supervision, operations, and other craft personnel and outside service representatives.
  • Reads and interprets instruction manuals, blueprints, and control system drawings, and applies knowledge to daily tasks.
  • Completes all written and electronic records (i.e. work orders, calibration sheets, material requests) required to document the work in progress and as it is completed.
  • Continually updates knowledge of plant systems and instrumentation.
  • Makes decisions about how best to repair equipment and what resources (tools, time equipment) will be needed.
  • Coordinates work activities with other crafts/contractors
  • Works with materials/chemicals (i.e. asbestos, silica, fiberglass, ammonia, hydrazine, lead, chlorine, PVC, Acetone, PCB's, mercury), oil, grease, etc.
  • Assure that procedures are issued and controlled as required by the QA/QC plan.
  • Provide engineering support for plant engineers and vendors for new projects and retrofits for existing equipment.
  • Maintain and enhance the safety of the I&C shop by implementing the Safety Plan and the goals established for the department, e.g. Job Safety Awareness forms, Safety Observations, Safety Meetings, etc.
  • Continually updates knowledge of plant systems and instrumentation.

Education and Experience

  • Must have 2 years formal training in electronics, instrumentation, engineering or related technical discipline,or

OR

  • 2 years military experience in electronics repair & calibration substituted for formal training

OR

  • 2 years' experienceof industrial Instrument & Control maintenance experience in repair, inspection, calibration & troubleshooting of related power plant/industrial equipment will substitute for the formal education or military experience.
  • Must have High School Diploma or equivalent.

Additional Responsibilities/Job Expectations

  • Excellent communications skills including written and verbal.
  • Complete understanding of plant operations and equipment required including knowledge of regulatory and plant specific codes and standards.
  • Ability to read English and understand technical manuals, classroom materials, and electrical and mechanical drawings and relate these to actual equipment.
  • Ability to operate and use such test equipment as multi-meters loop calibrators, and frequency devices. Ability to use hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and small electrical hand tools.
  • Leadership qualities and the ability to interface with multiple disciplines required.
  • Ability to use a PC and learn associated software - i.e. databases, spreadsheets, and operating systems, MS office suite applications especially Excel.
  • An understanding of the Reliability Based Maintenance is required.
  • Requires operation of a motor vehicle; valid Driver's License required.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Normal power plant environment and/or out-of-doors work environment.
  • Work around large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, and/or in confined places, on elevations in excess of 250 feet, or from platforms at heights of 5 feet or greater. Climb stairways, ladders, and work from aerial devices.
  • Must be prepared to work extended hours; varied/rotating shifts with weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and project conditions. Respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day; "On call" status will periodically be required.
  • Ability to work in mentally stressful environments: must be able to react to crises where immediate action is required to correct or curtail potentially damaging or hazardous situations.
  • Daily work expectation requires ability to perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and working with hand tools (up to 25 pounds) in position above and below head, and extended from body to complete repairs.
  • Lift, carry, position and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs.) in awkward positions, swing various weights of sledgehammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain-falls or come-a-longs.
  • Ability to twist the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment.
  • Performance of duties may cause frequent jarring of the body.
  • Work with and around hazardous and non-hazardous materials (reference the waste management guidance manual).
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required i.e., steel-toed boots, respirators, goggles, safety glasses etc.
  • Have ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals.
  • Ability to discern assorted colors
  • Limited travel may be required for training or to assist with other plant locations.
