Full Job Description

Job Summary

The Frances Willson Thompson Library is looking for several customer service-oriented University of Michigan - Flint students to join our team in Winter 2025. You will be an integral part of the campus community by helping fellow students use the library services and resources as well as being a source of information about campus.

Responsibilities*

  • Assist in day to day operations at the circulation desk, including opening and closing the library
  • Process lending, return, and renewal of library items using library computer systems.
  • Provide excellent customer service to University students, faculty, and staff, as well as public patrons of the library, both in person and by phone.
  • Maintain the stacks in the library by shelving, shelf reading, shifting, and doing daily pickups of library items.
  • Handle some basic maintenance and technology troubleshooting of ITS computers and multi-function printers.
  • Perform other assigned duties, including ad hoc projects in Technical Services and the Genesee Historical Collections Center.
  • Participate in ongoing training exercises and regular performance evaluations.

Required Qualifications*

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at UM-Flint in good standing.
  • Must be able to work 8-12 hours per week, including some weekend and evening shifts.
  • Must be able to lift, transport, sort, and shelve library materials.
  • Must be able to maintain patron confidentiality.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with patrons.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous library experience or customer service experience.
  • Outgoing personality.
  • Customer service oriented.
  • Knowledge of the UM-Flint campus.
  • Ability to accurately follow instructions, paying attention to details and work efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently or with a team.
  • Willingness to learn and be an active participant in the workplace.

Preference will be given to students who can make at least a one year commitment at their hire date. Preference also will be given to students with Work-Study.

Work Schedule

Approximately 8-12 hours per week, including evening shifts and occasional weekends.

Winter Operating Hours of the Library 

  • Monday - Thursday: 9am - 10pm
  • Friday: 9am - 6pm
  • Saturday: Closed
  • Sunday: Closed

The student employee work schedule is set at the beginning of each semester and takes into account scheduled class times. Please include a copy of your "Week at a Glance" class schedule for Winter 2025 and indicate preferred hours and days you can work.

Modes of Work

Onsite

The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.  Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.
