Overview
Perform mechanical repairs and maintenance of power plant equipment and their associated auxiliary components.
Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, test, inspect, and repair equipment such as boilers, turbines, pumps, motors, valves, condensers, heat exchanger vessels, etc.
- Troubleshoot stationary and rotating equipment. Make repairs as need in accordance with best practices.
- Operate machine shop equipment such as drill presses, lathes and boring mills.
- Repair or replace defective parts.
- Adjust clearances and tolerances on equipment, working from a blueprint, pattern or design drawing, lays out.
- Use micrometers and other precision devices.
- Design and build special tools and apparatus to facilitate work.
- Scrape and fits bearings on rotating equipment.
- Checks equipment operation by observing oil pressures and levels, foreign sounds and similar observations. Gather routine vibration data and perform basic analysis.
- Perform gas and/or arc welding in mechanical repairs and fabrication. Additionally performs Oxygen Acetylene cutting and brazing.
- Performs plumbing and pipe fitting tasks
- Remove and install non-asbestos insulation materials on boilers, heaters, tanks, turbines, lines, valves, etc.
- Develop proficiency with SAP (Computerized Maintenance Management System) in all job related areas.
- Uses blueprints, diagrams, sketches, instructions and specifications in daily duties.
- Sets up rigging for installing and removing equipment
- Climbs stairways, ladders, and works from scaffolding, platforms and aerial devices
- Identify and order proper materials for job completion
- Document work performed for equipment histories
- Recognizes safety hazards and follows safety guidelines
- Effectively apply knowledge of environmental rules and regulations in all work situations.
- Review and/or develop equipment spare parts lists and PM procedures.
- Assist in providing skill enhancement to other personnel
- Communicate effectively with all plant personnel
- Provide direction and/or supervise outside resources in areas of responsibility as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Five (5) years' maintenance mechanic experience in an industrial setting or military
Preferred Qualifications
- Five (5) years' maintenance mechanic experience in a power plant environment
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to use basic math and geometry
- Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally
- Ability to follow, interpret and act on written and verbal job instructions, and reports, technical manuals and data
- Ability to calculate measurements and computations used to repair and maintain power plant equipment
- Ability to perform work from ladders, catwalks, man-lifts and supports at various heights up to 150 feet
- Ability to crawl into and perform work in tight or confined places
- Ability to use half and full face respirators and other protective devices
- Strong knowledge of rotating equipment and industrial maintenance activities and procedures
- Ability to use hand tools of all types and sizes
- Ability to operate company vehicles and mobile equipment (e.g., cranes, forklifts, man-lifts etc.)
- Ability to lift, carry and position such items as large chain falls, slugging wrenches, heavy equipment and parts in awkward positions, swing various weights of sledge hammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain-falls, and come-a-longs
- Knowledge of handling and disposal of waste materials generated by maintenance activities
- Must have a valid driver's license
Physical Requirements:
- Climb steel structures, work from aerial devices, and work on ladders, catwalks and supports at heights of up to 150 feet using aerial man-lifts.
- Work with hand tools (up to 10 pounds) in position above and below head, and extended from body.
- Lift and pull approximately 50 lbs. in standing, bending and squatting positions.
- Perform work in each of several positions including lying on back, kneeling and crawling, twisting, and squatting, and reaching over head.
- Discern colors.
Working Conditions:
- Normal office environment and/or out-of-doors work environment.
- Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, high noise areas and elevations up to 150 feet.
- Work in all temperatures and climate conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme.
- Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirator protective equipment.
- Performance of duties requires response to calls 24 hours/day, seven days/week and working irregular shifts.
- Work with and around various materials and chemicals (i.e. asbestos, silica, fiberglass, ammonia, hydrazine, lead, chlorine, PVC, Acetone, PCB's, mercury), oil, grease, and various solvents.
- Wear half- and full-face respirators while wearing various other protective devices (Established facial hair in the sealing area of a respirator is not permitted at any time).
- Wear personal protective safety equipment (safety glasses, hard hat, appropriate footwear, ear plugs, etc.) as required.
- Contact lenses are not permitted except for specific medical reasons.
- Work may require cross training and travel to other facilities.
Please Note: Salary offered will be commensurate with the successful candidate's education and/or experience and in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement covering this position.
