Job Summary

The Department of Pathology is seeking a qualified Medical Technologist to work in the Immunology laboratory located at NCRC in Ann Arbor MI. The role of a Medical Technologist in Immunology is to process and analyze patient samples and accurately report test results within established time limits.

Responsibilities*

  1. Process incoming samples by ensuring correct labeling, computer log-in, centrifugation, aliquoting, and storage.
  2. Analyze patient specimens on instruments and/or by specified manual methodologies within specified turnaround times without sacrificing accuracy.
  3. Analyze and record quality control materials with documentation of action on out-of-range values.
  4. Accurately transcribe patient data from instrument printouts or worksheets into computer record including any pertinent sample description comments.
  5. Perform and record routine instrument maintenance procedures.
  6. Monitor instrument error codes, troubleshoot and correct problems as necessary.
  7. Record all instrument and QC problems in log book as a means of communication with other operators.
  8. Maintain work area in a well-stocked, clean condition.
  9. Instruct, train, and observe medical technology students, new employees, and pathology residents in bench procedures and theory.
  10. Adhere to all safety/infection control policies and procedures.
  11. Maintain a professional appearance and attitude in interactions with coworkers, supervisors, other hospital personnel, and hospital patients and their visitors.
  12. Fullfill departmental continuing education requirement.

Required Qualifications*

A baccalaureate degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science with clinical laboratory experience, and eligibility for medical technology certification by a professional society.

The applicant must have:

  1. The ability to organize and prioritize work.
  2. The ability to work under pressure of time and work volume without sacrificing accuracy.
  3. The ability to communicate effectively with other medical personnel.
  4. The ability to demonstrate and explain technical procedures and policies.
  5. The ability to recognize problems and take appropriate action.
  6. Skills basic to the practice of medical laboratory technology.

Desired Qualifications*

A baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology with certification by an accepted professional agency is preferred.  Experience with ELISA, immunofluoresence and electrophoresis methodologies is desirable.

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hour position is on the day shift and will be M-F 7:30 to 3:30.

Work Locations

This position is located in the Immunology Laboratory of the Clinical Pathology Department which is located in the NCRC complex at 2800 Plymouth Rd, Ann Arbor MI.

$3000 signing bonus available.

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
