Summary

This position is located in the Division of Clinical Services, OB-GYN Branch, Northern Navajo Medical Center, Shiprock, NM. Leading Educator in the Lactation process, participates in and coordinates patient care delivery. Interact and collaborate with members of the Multidisciplinary health care team and participate in the clinical decision making process. Consistently promote and provide safe and appropriate nursing care with the philosophy and mission of the Maternal Child Health section.

Duties

The Nurse (Educator) functions within their full scope of licensure/certification(s) and implements the lactation patient education process to include the following: Assess patient and family needs, develop a plan of care based on assessment, coordinate the development of a multidisciplinary plan of care as appropriate, facilitate implementation of the plan of care, review and evaluate the plan of care, collaborate with other health care providers to assure continuity of care, coordinate referrals for community services,and document education/consultant assessment plan in medical record.

  • Assesses lactation-related needs and problems per department and collaborates with healthcare providers to assure continuity of care.
  • Advocates for breastfeeding women and their children as part of the Maternal Child Health Team
  • Assists in the development of a multidisciplinary education/consultant plan based on individual patient/family needs
  • Provides individual and group instruction as identified in the patient/family education/consultant assessment and evaluates patient responses
  • Evaluates education/consultant plan with multidisciplinary team and/or family per program standards time frame.
  • The position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills to facilitate the translation of facts and ideas to persons within and beyond the scope of this specialty.
  • Provides input into the development of new and expanding programs, educational projects, and services.
  • Evaluates educational material to ensure adequacy, accuracy and effectiveness.Serves as a resource for other NNMC service, Navajo Area IHS, Headquarters and community agencies in area of expertise.Participates in community events to promote awareness and marketing of Maternal Child Health section services (OB/GYN/PEDS/Family Medicine, etc.).
  • Seeks out challenging learning opportunities, keeping self-current in latest breastfeeding scientific/equipment advances.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the , , , or an accrediting body recognized by the at the time the degree was obtained.

Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the . In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing. Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) Grade Level

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or
  • At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.
OR

GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Participation in teaching, developing, monitoring , and evaluating the diabetes education program; general health coaching for patients without diabetes as therapeutic lifestyle coaching, Assist with the provision and coordination of components of service unit diabetes care and education. Utilizes existing and self-developed teaching tools and course material and class population and consults with other members of the educational department team for their input into specialized training programs. Assesses learning and training needs of newly licensed nursing staff and contract/agency staff utilizing a variety of tools from which recommendations for in-service education, specialized training, individualized training, and new and improve training programs can be made. Collects and organizes data obtained from assessment methods. Teaches and/or directs and coordinates others to teach utilizing new or adapted approaches, Utilizes appropriate teaching methodology and leveling techniques to ensure course effectiveness and proper learner responses.
