Job Summary

The Department of Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital (VVWH) Nursing Services is a full-scope Perinatal care hospital at University of Michigan Health. We are seeking an experienced administrative professional to provide direct support to the nursing leadership.

Candidates for this position must have the knowledge, skills, abilities and experience needed to provide highly responsible and effective administrative support in an academic health care setting. Key skills include: accuracy and attention to detail, the ability to problem-solve, excellent planning skills, consistent and effective follow-through on all matters, high quality writing skills, excellent customer service and diplomacy and the ability to handle sensitive matters in a discreet manner. The successful candidate will be working in a fast-paced environment with ever-changing priorities and must be adaptable, able to work under pressure to meet deadlines, and able to develop relationships with clinicians and staff from across the health system as needed to support a collaborative environment.

  • Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, assist in the care of the childbearing mother and newborn assigned to a VVWH RN.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a safe, supportive family-centered environment that supports patient needs.
  • Assist the obstetrical team in the performance of delivery procedures, wherever they may occur.
  • Assist the RN in the care of the childbearing mother during all stages of labor to ensure a safe delivery for all labor patients.
  • Ensure efficient and consistent management of procedural instruments and devices in VVWH, excluding those used for surgical cases in the operating rooms
  • Must be able to perform a wide range of physical activities which include moving, standing for long periods of time, transporting and positioning patients and equipment as well as constantly positioning self to provide patient care and related duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team in addition to being able to take direction.
  • Communicate with patients, families and staff in a welcoming, caring and professional manner.

Responsibilities*

  • Assist with patient care and management of the care environment
  • Stock and maintain patient care supplies in designated care spaces; maintain organization, cleanliness and outdates.
  • Set-up beds/rooms for inpatient admission based on the approved checklist.
  • Ensure emergency equipment is in readiness in all patient rooms and including area arrest carts, neonatal resuscitation boxes, and hemorrhage carts.
  • Transport supplies, medications, specimens, patient belongings, carts, equipment, and medical records.
  • Set-up delivery table and perform set up instrument count for verification at delivery.
  • Ensure supplies for delivery including cord blood gas/ blood samples, other supplies as delegated by RN or provider are available in the room.
  • During labor or second stage, act as a second pair of hands for the RN. May act as runner to get supplies, help position patient, hold patient?s legs in proper position, remove foley catheter if instructed to, provide patient/family support, etc.
  • Assist RN with preparing warmer for delivery and NRP processes.
  • Perform accurate QBL in conjunction with the RN and provider and verbally communicate to delivery team in the room with updated amounts ? document values in the QBL calculator.
  • Assist with instrument and sponge counts in vaginal/operative vaginal deliveries.
  • Assist delivery team with cleaning up and positioning the patient post-delivery for comfort.
  • Provide patient with perineal ice pack, clean linens, gown, fluids/nutrition or maintaining NPO status.
  • Assist RN as needed for labor or delivery emergencies (e.g., calling for help, transport to the OR, obtaining supplies, or arrest/hemorrhage cart).
  • Draw cord blood gases at delivery and send for processing.
  • If patient to OR, remove soiled linens, remake bed to ready for transfer to PACU/patient room.
  • Tear-down delivery cart and perform or validate with RN/MD/CNM correct instrument and sponge count.
  • Properly dispose of all hazardous materials from delivery.
  • Assist the RN to clean the environment of the patient room post-delivery, facilitate getting Environmental Service in room.
  • Remove delivery cart and instruments upon completion of delivery. Clean cart and prepare and transport instruments for processing.
  • Facilitate pick-up of pathology specimens (i.e. placenta), including ensuring the requisition is completed.
  • Remove instruments from patient care spaces; prepare and transport for processing (i.e. speculums, Trophon equipment, circumcision trays, etc.).
  • Re-stock delivery cart and delivery supplies and replace them in the patient room.

Required Qualifications*

Required: High school diploma, GED or equivalent, ability to read and write, and one of the following:

  • Junior status in an accredited BSN program
  • Certified as a Nurse Aide (CNA, Patient Care Technician (CPCT/A), or Medical Assistant (CCMA)
  • 2nd year in accredited ADN program
  • Bachelors Degree in Applied Medical Science
  • A minimum 1-year recent experience in an unlicensed assistive role in a patient care setting, such as nurse aide in a hospital setting
  • A minimum two years experience in in an unlicensed assistive role in a patient care setting in a nursing home or other health care environment

Must be able to perform a wide range of physical activities which include moving, transporting and positioning patients and equipment as well as constantly positioning self to provide patient care and related duties.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Certified as a Nurse Aide (CNA, Patient Care Technician (CPCT/A), or Medical Assistant (CCMA)
  • Course work in an Allied Health field

Work Schedule

7 pm - 7:30 am 12 hour shifts

3 Days per week, 2 weekends per schedule period

Additional Information

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Tech to tech report is expected at the beginning of each shift. The off going tech then stays on the unit to help answer call lights and perform duties until RN report is finished. On-coming tech will also collaborate with RN for workflow during shift.
  • Identify mother and neonate per hospital/unit policy when separating from/re-uniting with one another.
  • Notify Team Leader or Charge Nurse of any patient care/equipment problems/issues.
  • Communicate to families in a welcoming, caring and professional manner; explain all procedures and care; answers questions
  • Write information on the patient white board as needed to keep updated
  • Work closely with the unit educators in the preceptor role for new hire L&D OB Techs to ensure appropriate learning opportunities and achievement of required clinical competencies by the orientee.

Supervision Received from the VVWH Clinical Nursing Director and VVWH Clinical Supervisors; functional supervision received from the L&D unit Charge Nurse, Team Leader and/or Staff Nurse.
