The Global Digital Commerce Platform Principal Engineer holds a pivotal leadership role, steering the strategic vision and technical design of Costco’s Global Digital Commerce Platform. This role will define and implement a highly scalable and resilient cloud strategy and provide hands-on technical leadership to the implementation team. This is a dynamic role requiring collaboration across multiple business and technical stakeholders and incorporates broad and diverse knowledge spanning technologies, such as cloud, virtualization, containerization, networking, content delivery, database, caching, security, API management, and more. The candidate will bring thought leadership in designing and implementing distributed cloud architecture patterns in public cloud spaces, such as Azure and Google Cloud.

ROLE
● Sets the strategic platform vision globally for digital online commerce and related omnichannel experiences in alignment with organizational goals.
● Provides leadership to guide and deliver highly performant, available, and scalable solutions leveraging multi-region principles.
● Recommends infrastructure upgrades to support business growth and evolving technology requirements.
● Designs, develops, and optimizes solutions for observability and automation.
● Ensures the integrity, security, compliance, and performance of platforms and the applications or services that reside within by partnering with peer engineers and architects.
● Partners with engineering and development teams to create and maintain documentation for key architecture and design decisions.
● Monitors the performance of platform products and provides technical leadership to drive stability and scalability of solutions.
● Stays abreast of emerging technologies and assesses their applicability to the organization.
● Fosters a collaborative environment that encourages knowledge sharing and skill development. Leads technical leadership forums - lunch and learn sessions for the rest of the engineering community in the organization.
● Leads and mentors a team of engineers; provides technical guidance, sharing best practices, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.
● Adheres to and drives modern software engineering practices through design reviews.
● Develops “best-in-class” engineering for our services by ensuring that the services and the components are well-defined and modularized, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored, and reusable.
● Ensures testability, portability/monitoring, reliability, and maintainability; and understands when code is ready to be shared and delivered.
● Improves test coverage for services; promotes a “shift-left” mindset; organizes and implements integration tests; and resolves problem areas.
REQUIRED
● Proven track record with at least 10+ years’ of hands-on experience in infrastructure and cloud engineering.
● 8+ years’ experience working with cloud platforms, such as Azure, or Google Cloud, to architect and implement scalable and efficient solutions.
● Experience with scalable services like serverless computing, containerization (Kubernetes, Docker), and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
● In-depth understanding and practical application of networking architecture principles and security: caching, content delivery, WAF.
● Experience dealing with high-volume and high-velocity transactions and designing systems that can handle the demands of real-time or near-real-time data.
● Demonstrated ability to drive innovation, adapt to emerging technologies, and implement industry best practices.
● Demonstrated ability to take ownership and responsibility of critical issues and conclude them to resolution.
● Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
● Proficient in using modern software development tools, version control systems (ex. Git), and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
● Solid understanding of software engineering principles, design patterns, and best practices for building highly scalable and maintainable systems.
● Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to dissect complex technical challenges and propose innovative solutions.
● Strong communication and leadership abilities, with a proven track record of collaborating effectively in cross-functional teams and mentoring junior engineers.
● Experience in leadership or senior roles, demonstrating the ability to guide and lead a team effectively as well as influence without authority.
Recommended
● Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline.
● Experience in retail, ecommerce, supply chain, manufacturing.
● Proven expertise in working with Google Cloud Platform technologies, such as Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, Apigee, CDN, Functions, App Engine, GKE, other platform technologies.
● Proven expertise in working with Microsoft Cloud technologies such as ADB2C, App Insights, Cosmos DB, APIM, AKS, Landing Zones, Subscriptions, other platform technologies.

Pay Range: $160,000 - $230,000, Bonus and Restricted Stock Unit (RSU) eligible
