Job Summary

The University of Michigan is looking for a Project Manager to participate in the one-year planning phase of a larger project with the Science, Technology, and Public Policy (STPP) team. The long-term goal of this project is to establish a permanent, sustainable state-level legislative science and technology policy fellowship in the state of Michigan. This will create a pathway for early career scientists and engineers to get involved and develop careers in science and technology policy while aiding state-level decision-making. As the project manager, you will focus on relationship building with our network of supporters in higher education and state government, fundraising, and developing plans for the recruitment, selection, and training of fellows. You will report to the STPP Managing Director.

Established in 2006, the STPP Program is a research center at the Ford School of Public Policy that includes research, educational, and community and policy engagement activities. Our work focuses on the ethical, political, social, environmental, and equity dimensions of science, technology, and related public policies.

Responsibilities*

  • Program development (40%)
    • Research and develop plans for the recruitment, selection, and training of fellows
    • Build and manage relationships with new and existing partners at the university, state, and national level 
    • Travel to two national conferences (AAAS Annual Meeting and NCSL Legislative Summit) is required by the terms of the grant funding .
  • Fundraising (40%)
    • Identify grant funding opportunities to support the fellowship program.
    • Identify and develop relationships with donors and philanthropic foundations.
    • Apply for grants to support the fellowship program.
  • Project management (20%)
    • Create agendas, run meetings, and take notes for the planning team.
    • Track project milestones, deadlines, and deliverables.
    • Communicate with collaborators at U-M and across Michigan, including working closely with STPP?s Education Program Manager. 
    • Attend monthly State Science and Technology Policy Fellowship Program meetings coordinated by the National Council of State Legislatures (NCSL)

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduate-level degree in public policy, education, science and technology studies, information science, or a relevant social science discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of and interest in science communication and/or science and technology policy
  • At least 2 years experience contributing to grant applications, preferably foundation grants
  • Experience with program management and evaluation concepts and practices (quantitative and/or qualitative)
  • Demonstrated writing, presentation, and public speaking experience
