Cardio-metabolic diseases result in the loss of about 17.9 million lives each year. The Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease Area (CVM) of Biomedical Research is committed to changing this alarming statistic by discovering transformative medicines to treat cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.We are seeking a highly motivated in vitro Senior Scientist to join our Cell Pharmacology team. You will advance our understanding of disease biology, contribute to target identification efforts, and work towards the discovery and optimization of new drugs for CVM. The work involves collaboration with research scientists across multiple disciplines as well as translational medicine colleagues who support bringing our drugs to patients.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute intellectually to experimental design and data interpretation.
- Support target identification, validation and mechanism-of-action projects, including work with primary cells, human iPSC derived cardiomyocytes, and/or tissues.
- Independently devise, develop and perform cell-based assays for drug discovery. You will also employ molecular biology (e.g. qPCR), biochemical and biophysical techniques.
- Support animal biology and pharmacology studies by developing and performing ex vivo assays.
- Independently conduct data analyses and documentation of experiments.
- Collaborate effectively while working in a matrixed environment.
- Employ good laboratory, data recording and data documentation practices.
- Present results in lab and department meetings.
- Assist in writing research documents and publications.
- Provide training and guidance to junior scientists on assays and instruments.
Role Requirements:
- BS degree or MS degree in biochemistry, molecular or cell biology, biophysics, biomedical engineering or a related field,
- 3-5+ years of relevant laboratory experience
- A record of accomplishments with peer-reviewed publications and/or abstracts is desired.
- Significant experience with cell culture is required.
- Experience in independently developing, executing, and troubleshooting cell-based assays for drug discovery is required.
- Flexibility and aptitude for learning, with the ability to quickly grasp new techniques and apply them to your work.
- Creative problem-solving capabilities.
- Experience in generation, analysis, and presentation of scientific data.
- Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work optimally in a matrixed team environment.
- Interest and willingness to work in any aspect of cardiovascular or metabolic disease.
Desired skills:
- Experience with qPCR and iPSC derived cells.
- Experience with gene silencing (RNAi or CRISPR) or other target validation activities.
- Experience in developing and utilizing cell-based models of disease is desired, but not a requirement.
- Experience with high throughput imaging approaches, including high content imaging is a plus.
- Experience with RNAseq, other 'omics technologies, and collaboration with data science colleagues is a plus, but not required.
Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between: $92,800 and $139,200/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
