Job Summary

This job opening is for a Temporary Decentralized Float Nurse position for Ambulatory Care Services, which includes staffing assignments in either the Centralized Nurse Triage (CNT) Program, COVID RN Hotline, the COVID Testing Drive-Thru sites or within Ambulatory Care Immunization-Shot Clinics. 

Please note that these positions do not qualify for UMHS benefits and specific terms and conditions of employment are negotiated at the department level.
These positions are not covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U of M Professional Nurse Council.

In addition:
Unit- based temporary employees who have worked 400 hours in a calendar year then become a
Per Diem employee and have an obligation to pay dues or service fees as covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U of M Professional Nurse Council. Once the employee meets the 400 hour threshold, they then are a union member for the duration of employment as Per Diem.
Temporary APRN employees and MVC temporary employees are not eligible for Per Diem status.

Responsibilities*

This job opening is for a Temporary Decentralized Float Nurse position for Ambulatory Care Services, which includes staffing assignments in either the Centralized Nurse Triage (CNT) Program, COVID RN Hotline, the COVID Testing Drive-Thru sites or within Ambulatory Care Immunization-Shot Clinics. 

  • To provide the delivery of culturally sensitive, age-specific nursing care to all Michigan Medicine patients through the Centralized Nurse Triage (CNT) Program, COVID Hotline, the COVID Drive-Thru Testing sites, and within the Ambulatory Care Flu-Shot Clinics. This includes adult medicine, pediatric, and OB/GYN patient populations.
    Centralized Nurse Triage (CNT)
  • To perform telehealth nursing for the Centralized Nurse Triage (CNT) Program including, but not limited to:
    • Assessment of patient needs and assist with medical issues related to health concerns.
    • Manage prescription refill requests and secure patient messages.
    • Adapts communication style to patients representing diverse personal, professional, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
    • Uses excellent listening skills to receive detailed information.
    • Utilize electronic protocol database to assess, educate and document all health information in an accurate and expedient fashion.
    • Responsive to the needs of a program (hours of operation)
    • Meets minimum established quality and productivity standards 
    • Knowledge and appropriate use of internal and external resources.
    • Collaborate with providers when necessary in providing advice or determining disposition for patient.
    • Provide functional supervision to assistive personnel; collaborate with colleagues, other disciplines, and health care/community services to promote continuity of care

COVID HOTLINE:
To perform telehealth nursing including phone triage; assessment, screening, and patient education. 
Accurate and expedient documentation of nursing care. 
Knowledge and appropriate use of internal and external resources.
Collaborate with colleagues, other disciplines, and health care/community services to promote continuity of care.

DRIVE-THRU TESTING SITES: 
Direct contact with patients to collect specimens for COVID testing
Long periods of standing required

AMBULATORY CARE Immunization-SHOT CLINICS:
Direct contact with patients to administer flu and/or COVID shots. 
Long periods of standing required

Required Qualifications*

As evidenced by interviews, recent performance appraisals and reference feedback:

  • Current licensure to practice nursing in Michigan. 
  • Minimum of 2 years recent (within 5 years) Inpatient or Emergency or Ambulatory Care nursing experience providing care to both adult medicine and pediatric patients.

  • BSN
  • Tele-health management skills
  • Ability to manage complex clinical issues utilizing assessment skills, protocols and evidence-based interventions.
  • Experience as a charge nurse or equivalent management skills
  • Proficiency with typing and electronic health record documentation. 
  • Bilingual 

Work Schedule

  • Hours/Week: TEMP; hours and days vary depending on CNT/hotline/drive-thru/flu-shot clinic needs, and can range from 16-40 hours per week and will include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Shift/Hours/Days: Various Hours/Various Days of the week. May include weekends and holidays. 
  • Location: Brighton Center for Specialty Care, Northville Health Center, Taubman Clinic, West Ann Arbor, South Industrial Highway, East Ann Arbor Health Center, North Campus Administrative Complex.  

Note: All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

PER DIEM / UNIT-BASED TEMPORARY NURSE GUIDELINES

1. Each Per Diem or unit-based temporary employee working three or more shifts per scheduling period will be scheduled to work a minimum of two weekend shifts per scheduling period (8 hours = 1 shift). The contractual definition of a weekend applies for Per Diem or unit-based temporary employees.*
Per Diem or unit-based temporary nurses who preschedule two or fewer shifts per scheduling period do not have to meet the weekend requirements.
They may add additional UNANTICIPATED SHIFTS ONLY.

2. Each Per Diem or unit-based temporary nurse will be expected to work a portion of scheduled shifts on off shifts (recommended guide: 25%).

3. Managers may establish additional guidelines based upon individual unit scheduling requirements. Therefore, it is recommended that managers and per diem nurses or unit-based temporary meet to discuss specific unit
expectations.

4. Each Per Diem or unit-based temporary nurse will be scheduled to work the number of shifts during holiday weeks that reflects his/her normal scheduling pattern. Per Diem or unit-based temporary nurses should be scheduled to work shifts during three out of the six holiday weeks and one of these weeks should be Christmas or New Year's week. (A week is defined as Sunday through Saturday during which the holiday falls).

Per Diem or unit-based temporary nurses are to be scheduled after all regular staff are scheduled per contract language.

*Guidelines apply to all Per Diem or unit-based temporary nurses regardless of hire date.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
