The role:
Are you a professional engineer with a passion for highway safety? Do you want to develop policy and manage statewide programs aimed at saving lives of drivers and people walking or biking on our highways and streets? We are recruiting for the state traffic safety engineer to join our team in Salem! As an agency expert, you will lead, guide and support advancing effective highway safety engineering efforts and assist the state traffic engineer by developing policy, programs and research related to advancing traffic safety engineering. A day in the life:

  • Serve as the statewide expert in highway safety data, safety engineering issues, and human factors that contribute to crashes and in applying countermeasures to reduce crashes.

  • Develop, support, maintain and administer the federally funded statewide Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), implemented as the All-Roads Transportation Safety (ARTS) Program.

  • Oversee and coordinate the preparation of our agency’s annual Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) reports to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

  • Prepare, review and update data, policies and guidelines as needed.

  • Share information critical to safety data, methods, implementation and decision-making among state agencies, local agencies and the public.

  • Initiate and guide traffic safety research and recommend and participate in research activities pertaining to highway safety engineering including implementing the Highway Safety Manual.

  • Collaborate within our agency and with the Federal Highway Administration in setting highway safety goals and performance measures for Oregon.

  • Determine training needs and develop and implement training programs.

  • Work in an office environment with hybrid work options available – remote work schedule will be agreed upon by supervisor and employee.

  • Some in-state travel and occasional out of state travel is required.

Minimum qualifications:
A valid professional engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering and three (3) years of journey level professional engineer experience.

Note: Three (3) years of journey level professional engineer experience is considered licensed experience only. If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain professional registration in Oregon within six months of hire.

Special qualifications:
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Road Safety Professional Certification from the Transportation Professional Certification Board.
