The Nature Conservancy in Rhode Island is part of the Stormwater Innovation Center (SIC) based in Roger Williams Park. The SIC uses the City of Providence's investment in green stormwater structures to understand stormwater quality and benefits to wildlife habitat. In addition, the SIC provides training and education to municipalities and conducts outreach and community engagement. The Urban Stormwater Outreach Education Coordinator will contribute to the Stormwater Innovation Center's work with the Cyanobacteria Monitoring Collaborative.

WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Watershed Science & Outreach Coordinator will support both scientific fieldwork and community engagement efforts related to coastal restoration and urban stormwater monitoring. This role involves assisting with field sampling, including electronic and video fish detection, juvenile fish seines, artificial reef monitoring, and cyanobacteria assessments, with some work conducted on a research vessel in nearshore waterways. The coordinator will also process and analyse data, conduct statistical analyses, create data visualizations, and contribute to reports and literature reviews.

In addition to fieldwork, this position will play a key role in outreach and education for the Stormwater Innovation Center's cyanobacteria and water quality monitoring program. The associate will work with Conservancy staff, partners, and community organizations to translate scientific data into accessible materials for diverse audiences. Responsibilities include providing monitoring demonstrations, recruiting and training community members to monitor local ponds, and leading public outreach activities on stormwater impacts. When needed, the associate will also participate in additional coastal monitoring projects, such as fish and habitat surveys.

This seasonal position is essential for ensuring the efficient execution of restoration and monitoring projects while fostering community engagement in environmental stewardship. This is a 6-month position beginning on June 2, 2025, and ending on November 14th, 2025. It is a full-time, temporary position (35 hours per week). The Watershed Science & Outreach Coordinator is supervised by the Coastal Restoration Science Technician and Coastal Restoration Project Manager. This is an hourly position with a rate between $20-22 per hour depending on experience.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING
  • Experience coordinating projects.
  • Experience following standard procedures and/or quality assurance plans.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g.First Aid, CPR).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a graduate program (preference given to URI students) or conducting graduate-level research in stormwater, biology, conservation, marine science, ichthyology, or a related field.
  • Coursework or experience in biostatistics, data analysis, data visualization, GIS, and programming (R or Python).
  • Knowledge of aquatic ecosystems, fish assemblages, estuarine biology, and cyanobacteria life history.
  • Experience with scientific research, data entry, and working in a lab setting (including microscopy).
  • Boating experience and general comfort being in or near water.
  • Strong communication skills, including public education, proposal writing, and engaging with diverse audiences.
  • Experience designing outreach materials, infographics, or other visual content for science communication.
  • Ability to organize time, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with multicultural or cross-cultural engagement; multilingual skills appreciated.
  • Ability to secure a driver's license and maintain a good driving record.

SALARY INFORMATION

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $20-$22 hourly rate for annual base salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
