Course Description

The Department of Film, Television, and Media is seeking to hire GSIs for the Winter 2025 term. Fraction appointments will range from .25 to .50. Please see the course guide for discussion times and locations. Placements will not be finalized until mid/late November, and offer-letters will be sent out around that time.

  • FTVM 150 - Intro to Film (2 positions at 50%)
    • Each GSI must teach 2 sections capped at 25
  • FTVM 353 - Film History: Post New Wave (1 position at 50% and 1 position at 25%)
    • GSI must teach 1-2 sections capped at 25

Responsibilities*

  • Attend all lectures, screenings, and exams for your preferred course. (Exam times TBD. Verify your own course schedule against the schedule for the course to which you are applying as a GSI. All GSIs are required to attend the lecture, screenings, and discussion times as posted.)
  • Run discussion sections as scheduled. (See links to LSA Course Guide above.) If your schedule will accommodate some but not all of the discussion sections as scheduled, please let us know in your cover letter which sections you can and cannot teach. Note that both lecture and discussion sections are scheduled as in-person instruction.
  • Hold at least 2 office hours each week.
  • Grade assignments, per lead faculty instruction.
  • Meet weekly with the lead instructor, and respond promptly to emails.
  • Additional items listed in fraction calculation form

Required Qualifications*

To be considered for this position, you must be a University of Michigan graduate student in good standing, taking at least 6 credit hours in the term you are applying for.

Desired Qualifications*

LSA student enrolled in a graduate program.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Decision Making Process

Applications are reviewed and positions are assigned by the Graduate Program Coordinator, in consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies. Considerations include academic qualifications and prior teaching experience, as well as course preference. 

Selection Process

The Department of Film, Television, and Media will make reasonable efforts to extend offers within 3 weeks after the application due date. If offered a GSI position, the deadline to respond to offer letters is one week from the distribution date of the letter. Applicants may request the status of their application from the Film, Television, and Media Department.
