Job Summary

Department Summary:

Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services (SAAS) is a student-centered unit within the Division of Student Life whose work is guided by best-practice standards and interventions utilizing a multidimensional model of student well-being.  SAAS oversees four key resources: Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), Adaptive Sports and Fitness program (ASF), Testing Accommodation Centers (TAC), and Academic Support and Access Partnerships (ASAP)  and is committed to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility by providing support services, advocacy, and academic accommodations to students with disabilities. SAAS  is strongly committed to outreach services to the academic community at large, promoting awareness of disability issues and providing support for equal access for all students. SAAS is a partner to students, faculty, and staff in the pursuit of developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director, TAC, will oversee the Testing Accommodation Center's services, including managing the daily operations; supervising, coordinating, and scheduling staff; coordinating testing services for students with disabilities, including scheduling appointments, collecting confidential tests from instructors, and overseeing proctoring of tests; resolving logistical issues for a variety of accommodation scheduling needs; lead planning,  implementation, and evaluation of the day-to-day operations of the TAC; collaborating with Disability Access Coordinators to ensure the testing environment is effectively meeting the recommended accommodations; direct hiring, training, and scheduling of student temp workers; managing the physical space and equipment; coordinating the provision of adaptive equipment and furniture; consulting with faculty and staff to coordinate testing and accommodations at sites; serving as a resource for best practice testing accommodations standards for separate and quiet space, fielding questions from faculty and instructional staff.  The Assistant Director will partner with SAAS colleagues in research, data collection, and analysis on accommodations and service delivery. 

Responsibilities*

65% Departmental Leadership and Operations:

  • Support the Director in identifying, developing, and implementing the strategic vision for the TAC, including forecasting future needs.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations, and set the standard for TAC office culture by developing and maintaining policies and procedures governing TAC operations, including establishing scope and direction, in facilitating accommodated exams for the university community.
  • Manage all the TAC professional and temporary staff, providing leadership to the TAC Supervisor and a team of facilitators; organize and lead weekly meetings, ensuring full coverage of staff for the operation of the TAC, and ensuring TAC fulfills its mission of providing accommodated exams. Serve as primary support with conflict resolution and/or performance management.
  • Serve as a member of SAAS leadership and work closely with other departments within SAAS. When needed, support other SAAS departments and leadership.
  • Responsible for identifying emerging trends and necessary areas of training and development for the TAC team; develop resources and training, including overseeing the administration of training and onboarding policies and procedures.
  • Primary point of contact and representative for the TAC team in interactions and partnerships with campus partners. Coordinate collaborative efforts with departmental staff, faculty, and staff around testing accommodations and long-range planning around initiatives such as orientation for all 19 U-M colleges/schools in utilizing Testing Accommodation Centers.
  • Responsible for maintaining up-to-date accurate statistics and reporting of TAC functions
  • Administer the departmental budget in the areas of salary and operating expenditures; monitor income and expenses and adjust expenditures to meet budget goals. Oversee short-term financial reporting of department budget: Assist with assessment initiatives and reporting.
  • Keep up to date with certifications needed to run a testing accommodations center.
  • Identify and elevate compliance issues and concerns to SAAS Leadership, as appropriate.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of current best practices for providing testing accommodations, test proctoring, and disability-related civil rights laws applicable in higher education through ongoing staff collaboration and professional development.
  • Ensure that Student Accessibility and Accommodations Services (SAAS) and Testing Center policies and procedures are followed.

20% Outreach and Development:

  • Develop relationships with key stakeholders across the university community to support the work of the TAC and develop potential future resources, including space.
  • Engage in outreach activities on a University, community, and nationwide level through participation in local, state, and national disability conventions.
  • Responsible for fielding, reviewing, and tracking requests for interviews, presentations, and workshops and, in conjunction with SAAS leadership, developing materials and messaging to ensure the TAC is effectively and consistently communicating with the university community.

5% Administration of Testing Accommodations:

  • Greet visitors, answer questions, and direct individuals to appropriate resources, check students in and out when arriving for testing.
  • Utilize Accommodate software to provide test accommodation services for students.
  • Collaborates with campus accessibility advocates to set up appropriate testing accommodations.
  • Reviews exam, test, or quiz requests for scheduling and administration purposes.
  • Contact faculty to secure tests and collect instructions for test administration.
  • Confirms testing instructions, materials allowed, and disposition of completed exam.
  • Receives and schedules exam, test, or quiz requests through Accommodate.
  • Monitor student behavior in the testing center and resolve or report test irregularities.
  • Documents and collects statistical data and prepares detailed reports regarding exam, test, or quiz activity and administration.
  • Responds to faculty and staff inquiries regarding accommodated exams, tests, or quizzes.
  • Work with the LSA Student Academic Affairs, Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), and other support services and academic units to develop, implement, evaluate, and assess test accommodation services within the university.
  • Create new ways of providing information about TAC to students, instructors, staff
  • Serve as the primary resource for instructional and support staff on academic and administrative procedures for test accommodations beyond the classroom in congruence with accommodation policies established by Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD).

5% General Support:

  • Responsible for answering calls in the testing center, taking messages, and informing the appropriate parties
  • Assists with training staff regarding serving students with disabilities.
  • Support the research and maintain knowledge of current trends and new assistive technology.
  • Orient students using new equipment and provide ongoing support.
  • Inventory, issue, and collect equipment on loan to students for accommodation.
  • Coordinate the provision of adaptive equipment and furniture.
  • Stock and maintain supplies as needed
  • Work with ITS to submit service and 4Help requests, point of contact for ITS support
  • Work with facilities to communicate and coordinate repair requests, work orders, and maintenance needs.
  • Respond to Office Center email

5% Service to Student Life and the University

  • Actively represent the TAC in the Division of Student Life activities and provide expertise and leadership to University constituents regarding best practice policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Foundational knowledge and/or experience with ADA compliance or disability accommodations services
  • 5 years working in a testing center environment or facilitating accommodated testing
  • Experience managing a team or department
  • Experience supervising professional staff
  • Computer knowledge, proficiency, and skills
  • Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility:

  • Assist with oversight and responsibility for a budget of approximately $1 million.

Working Conditions:

  • Hours of operation will be between 7:30 am - 9 pm. The timing of individual shifts will vary. Staff could be expected to work earlier or later evening hours or weekends, especially during final exam season.

Direct Reports:

  • One Office Administration Senior Supervisor

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
